Grading the Cleveland Browns’ 2010 NFL Draft

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Browns had a very eventful 2010 Draft, remaining active in trying to get players that would address specific, and glaring, needs. I’d say that was done well, considering how many needs this team actually has. Only time will tell how these players pan out in the league, but here are the initial grades for the Browns’ 2010 NFL Draft: CB Joe Haden, Florida (1st round, 7th overall): It’s hard to argue with a pick that addresses the Browns’ secondary, an area of great concern heading into this off-season. If safety Eric Berry had been available here, there is little [...]

High Hopes for Browns QB Colt McCoy, But Low Pressure? Not in Cleveland

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft, Quarterback Drama | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Mike Florio has written in an article for the Sporting News that of the top four quarterbacks taken in the 2010 NFL Draft, Colt McCoy of the Cleveland Browns could end up being the best of them all. Sam Bradford has to deal with, well, just being on the St. Louis Rams, while there are a million questions surrounding Tim Tebow. As for Jimmy Clausen, his situation in Carolina might seem ideal, but the addition of quarterback Tony Pike has to say something about what the Panthers might ultimately think of him. As for Colt McCoy, as Florio discusses, he [...]

Browns Sign Nine Undrafted Free Agents

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft | COMMENTS: None Yet

Browns Pro Bowler Josh Cribbs has become an integral part of the organization, the catalyst that sparks the team with his electrifying kick returns and versatility in the offense. He also went undrafted in 2005. He’s not the only great player to go undrafted, either. Great players can be found after the draft, so the signing of undrafted free agents each year is not something to be overlooked. That being said, here are the nine undrafted free agents the Browns signed after the 2010 NFL Draft: DE Auston English, Oklahoma LB Eryk Anders, Alabama DE/LB Daniel Howard, Texas Tech OL [...]

Clifton Geathers: I Like This Guy!

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

The Cleveland Browns got a value selection in the 6th round, 186th overall, of the 2010 NFL Draft.  His name is Clifton Geathers. Here is an interview of Geathers which gives you a glimpse into his personality:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0tbdcPVQvQ. This guy is a monster defensive end.  Before the Draft started, he was ranked around 130th overall;  projected to be selected in the 4th or 5th round;  and rated 14th at his position. Although relatively raw upon leaving school after his junior season, Geathers has massive size and strength.  He is almost 6 foot 8 inches tall and weighs about 300 pounds. Notwithstanding [...]

Mike Holmgren “Pulled Rank” to Draft QB Colt McCoy

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft, Quarterback Drama | COMMENTS: None Yet

If it wasn’t for Kentucky defensive tackle Corey Peters being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round, only two picks before the Browns selected quarterback Colt McCoy, there’s a good chance the team’s current quarterback of the future would not be in a Browns uniform. GM Tom Heckert and the rest of the draft room were looking to address the needs of the defensive and offensive lines, and Peters was going to be the Browns’ original choice with the 85th pick. Holmgren says that he “…kept saying, ‘What about the quarterback?’” and I don’t blame him. McCoy fell to the Browns when no [...]

It’s Never Too Early to Look at the 2011 NFL Draft

AUTHOR: | IN: 2011, Browns, NFL Draft, Team Needs | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Having an NFL Draft hangover? Have you pored over so much information regarding the 2010 NFL Draft that you feel like your brain is melting out of your ears? Why not try getting a head start on the 2011 draft? NFL Mocks has started the fun by putting out its first 2011 Big Board, with Washington quarterback Jake Locker at the top of the list. It is obviously way too early to tell how this will all shake out, but Browns fans should keep their eyes on the linebackers, wide receivers, and Ohio State offensive guard Justin Boren. This could [...]

QB Colt McCoy Won’t Play in 2010

AUTHOR: | IN: Browns, Quarterback Drama | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

There are no doubt fans who want quarterback Colt McCoy to play right away, but Browns president Mike Holmgren wants to make something clear: McCoy will be spending his rookie season on the sidelines. With Jake Delhomme as the starter, it gives McCoy some time to learn the system and get acclimated to the NFL. As has been the case with many young quarterbacks in the past, being thrust into a starter’s role too early can set a player back, especially if his confidence is affected. When given time to stand on the sidelines and “figure it all out,” it has proven to produce [...]

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Browns added more depth to some thin positions on day three of the 2010 NFL Draft. Here is a quick recap of the Browns selections from rounds 5 and 6: In the 5th round with the 29th pick (160th overall) the Browns added more secondary help in S Larry Asante from Nebraska. With two 6th round picks at their disposal, the Browns selected WR Carlton Mitchell out of South Florida with the 8th pick (177th overall), and then took DE Clifton Geathers from South Carolina with the 17th pick (186th overall). Browns Select OG Shawn Lauvao With 92nd Pick

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft | COMMENTS: None Yet

After the excitement of the Colt McCoy pick, the last pick the Browns had in the third round was almost under the radar. Cleveland selected Arizona State offensive lineman Shawn Lauvao with the 92nd overall pick. Lauvao was one of the most versatile offensive linemen in college football, playing on both the left and right sides of the line. Even better, Lauvao was a very consistent player, finishing his career with 33 consecutive starts. A powerful lineman, Lauvao’s versatility and strength will make him very valuable to the Browns. He is not as strong on the ends, but he would [...]

Browns Select QB Colt McCoy With 85th Pick

AUTHOR: | IN: 2010, Browns, NFL Draft, Team Needs | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

// // Well, it may not have gone exactly how Colt McCoy would have liked, but with the 85th pick in the draft he finally became a member of the Browns. While at Texas, McCoy became the winningest quarterback in NCAA history with 45 victories; in addition, he was a two-time first-team AP All-American. In 2008, McCoy won the Walter Camp Award for being the player of the year, and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.  During the 2009 season McCoy took home the Maxwell Award(collegiate player of the year), Davey O’Brien (top QB), and Johny Unitas Golden Arm Award (top [...]
