Browns Plan to Draft QB, But Colt McCoy is Still the Man
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the Browns would consider drafting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft. After all, that’s been a part of president Mike Holmgren’s draft strategy for quite some time, and he used to have a pretty dependable quarterback during his time in Green Bay.
Fret no more, Browns fans! While we convinced ourselves that the Browns’ beloved kicker Phil Dawson would be moving on to another team after this season, it seems as though the team had other plans.
Grading the 2010 Cleveland Browns: Offense
Anemic offenses and the Cleveland Browns have unfortunately become synonymous with each other nearly every season since the team’s return in 1999. Granted, there have been a few outlying years of competence but, for the most part, it’s been a steady stream of one poorly-run offense after another. In 2010, the Browns ranked 29th out of 32 teams in total offense, though the team ranked nine spots higher in rushing offense compared to passing offense (20th for rushing, 29th for passing). Nevertheless, the Browns fell into the familiar patterns of the Brian Daboll-led offenses: predictable, slow offenses that made achieving [...]
Around the Dawg Pound: Friday Afternoon Links
So quarterback Colt McCoy and his father are writing a book about football, parenting, and faith. Titled “Rock Solid,” the book will be released later in 2011 as the Browns return to training camp. Are you going to read it when it comes out? Here are some more links for you on this Friday afternoon: ESPN’s Todd McShay says Browns will take Alabama DT Marcell Dareus in the 2011 NFL Draft (Cleveland.com) When Eric Mangini Met Tony Grossi (Cleveland Frowns) 2011 Holmgren Report: Linebackers (Waiting for Next Year) Browns could face tough choice with first pick: Receiver or defensive line [...]
On KILT in Houston, former Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers opened up about his time in Cleveland, talking about his injury-ridden 2010 season and what he thinks about former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Don’t worry, he’s got nothing but praise for him. While his motivation was continuously questioned in Cleveland, he never comes off as bitter in his interview, chalking up his release as “one of those things that come with the territory when you’re a veteran…” He also goes on to mention that he played through injuries last season against his agent’s wishes. A transcript of the interview, and [...]
Cleveland Browns Round Out Pat Shurmur’s Coaching Staff
The Cleveland Browns completed Pat Shurmur’s coaching staff on Monday, adding assistants and announcing the coaches who were retained. The team brought in Chris Beake (offensive assistant), Chuck Bullough (defensive assistant), Shawn Mennenga (special teams assistant), Ray Rhodes (senior assistant/defense), and Keith Gilbertson will be a senior assistant on offense after serving as the Browns’ director of pro personnel last year. The Browns also retained the following coaches: Gary Brown (running backs), Steve Hagen (tight ends), Jerome Henderson (defensive backs), Kent Johnston (strength and conditioning), Rick Lyle (assistant strength and conditioning), Luke Steckel (assistant to the head coach), and George [...]
Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said Thursday night that he will, in fact, be calling the offensive plays during the 2011 season, provided that there is a 2011 NFL season. Despite the fact that some coaches have been known to call their own plays, it’s not for everyone. Add to the fact that this is Shurmur’s first head coaching gig, and there is certainly some reason for concern. What is encouraging, however, is the fact that Shurmur addressed the possibility of quarterback Colt McCoy being the starter next season. He said “it’s a logical assumption” that McCoy will be [...]
The Browns began trimming defensive players today, as they released six players, including former Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers. The team also let go of linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton, defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman, tight end Robert Royal, and offensive lineman John St. Clair. To be honest, none of these moves are that surprising, and that includes Rogers. He only started one game in 2010, due to injuries and the emergence of Ahtyba Rubin as the nose tackle of the future. Not to mention he was going to make $5.5 million with a $500,000 roster bonus in 2011. [...]
Now that Super Bowl XLV has come and gone, it’s time to think ahead. Not just to the upcoming NFL Draft, but to next year’s Super Bowl. We’ll just pretend that a new deal gets done and there will be an NFL season because the prospect of no football next year is not something we want to consider. The Cleveland Browns are currently sitting at 65/1 odds, which isn’t the worst, but it certainly isn’t all that great, either. If you’ve got a feeling about them for next year, you’ll at least be raking it in should they win. The [...]
